Bio

Romanian pianist Dr. Andreea Muţ attended the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, before completing her Master of Music degree at Sam Houston State University, and her Doctorate in Collaborative Arts at the University of Houston. Dr. Muţ has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout Romania, France, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States. She has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions, including First Prize in the Martian Negrea National Competition, Ploiești, Romania (2008), Second Prize in the Pro Piano International Competition Bucharest, Romania (2004), and Third Prize in the “Carl Filtsch” International Competition, Sibiu, Romania (2001), among others.

Between 2012 and 2014, Dr. Muţ held the position of Head Repetiteur and Assistant Conductor at Opera in the Heights Houston. In 2016, she made her vocal coach debut in Robert Ward’s Roman Fever at the University of Houston, followed by a second appointment as Music Director and pianist for the Moores Opera House production of Nino Rota’s I due timidi.

A prolific collaborative pianist and recitalist, Dr. Muţ holds the keyboard chair for ROCO Chamber Orchestra, and has enjoyed collaborations with organizations such as Da Camera Houston, APERIO – Music of the Americas, AURA – the Moores School of Music Contemporary Ensemble, the Foundation for Modern Music, the Clear Lake Chamber Ensemble, Texas New Music Ensemble, the Texas Two Year College All State Choir, the Houston Symphony Chorus, Le Chiavi – The Institute of Bel Canto Studies, the Texas Music Festival, Opera San Antonio, Houston Youth Symphony, Songs by Heart Foundation, Sphinx Organization, and the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

A passionate chamber musician, Dr. Muț enjoys a variety of chamber music collaborations. In 2017, she was a senior faculty member for the Classical Music Institute in San Antonio, Texas. In July 2019, she joined them in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya’s birth with the performance of her Concerto for Piano, String Orchestra, and Timpani, with conductor José Luis Gomez. She has amassed extensive experience as a collaborative pianist, and her interest in this role led her to form a duo with violinist Dr. Ingrid Gerling. The Gerling-Muț duo performs a wide range of repertoire, and has a strong commitment to performing contemporary music. The duo performs regularly for the Harmony in the Air series at the Hobby Airport, and has also performed recitals in venues such as the Rothko Chapel Houston, the University of St. Thomas, San Jacinto College, St. Stephen’s Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, and the First Congregational Church Houston. These performances were received with fervent enthusiasm, and the duo was invited to perform for the Memorial Classical Music series, at the Arts of Tolerance Inaugural Event at Rice University’s Boniuk Institute, and at Miller Outdoor Theatre for the Foundation of Modern Music’s event “Music That Should Be Danced.”

In addition to her numerous performance obligations, Dr. Muţ is currently serving as the organist at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, Houston, TX, staff pianist and vocal coach at the University of Houston, and pianist for one of the premier choirs in the United States – the Houston Chamber Choir, the recipient of the 62nd Annual Grammy® Award for Best Choral Performance, the American Prize in Choral Performance 2015, and the 2018 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America.

Dr. Muț has been a Shigeru Kawai Artist since August 2021.
