Continuing their sixteenth season, ROCO explored the interplay of light and dark in “Shadows”. Built around a commission by Alyssa Morris, Tlapalli Tlahuilli was inspired by an Aztec myth detailing how the world received its sound and color. The world premiere featured ROCO’s principal winds as soloists and was preceded by members of the Calmecac Indigenous Arts Organization narrating the inspiration for the work – Gerald McDermott’s book “Musicians of the Sun”. Led by conductor Ward Stare in his ROCO debut, and streamed live from The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion presented by Huntsman, the concert also featured Patrick Harlin’s Shadow Dancer and violinist Maureen Nelson in Luigi Dallapiccola’s Baroque-inspired work, Tartiniana Seconda. Recorded live February 27, 2021, The Woodlands, TX.
