The local chamber orchestra ROCO has long been a staple of Houston’s performing arts scene.
With a journey beginning in 2005 at the Church of St. John the Divine, the group has been nothing but a success for founder and oboist Alecia Lawyer.

Now in its twentieth year, the ensemble has performed at over 70 venues across the region, and will have presented 150 world premieres by the end of this season. On top of that, they’ve released an album by a Grammy-winning producer, published a children’s book, and have spread their influence in the region via musical QR codes at nearly 40 spots across Greater Houston.
Ahead of their next concert, ROCO musicians Alecia Lawyer, Delyana Lazarova, Nathan Williams, and Scott St. John looked back on their experiences with the group and some of their favorite pieces. You can hear their thoughts in the audio above.
“Courageous,” featuring ROCO alongside musicians from the Houston Youth Symphony, and some premiere performances of works by composer Clarice Assad, takes place on Saturday, February 8th at 5 PM at the Church of St. John the Divine.
