ROCOrooters Program Overview
-
-
- Check-in begins at 4:30 PM at Administration building’s front desk.
- Parents must meet with the ROCOrooters staff for check-out.
- Registration Form: Parents must complete the registration form online (linked in the order confirmation email); if they have not done so before arrival, they will need to fill it out during check-in.
- Pick-up Times: Parents can choose to pick up their children after the concert (around 7:15 PM) or later. The latest pick-up time is 10:00 PM to allow parents time after the concert.
- The music teacher will accompany children aged 3 years and older to listen to a musical piece at the concert hall. This may sometimes be the first piece in the program, so please arrive early to ensure that your child(ren) can enjoy this experience! Afterwards, children will return to the classroom for a music lesson related to the piece they just heard.
- Pizza and water will be served around 6:15 or 6:30 PM, followed by individually wrapped snacks later in the evening.
- As the evening continues, children will stay with the childcare staff to play games, watch a movie, or review their music lesson until pick-up time. Babies and young children will be put to bed.
-
Parents can choose to pick up their kids after the concert around 7:15 PM, but the latest pick-up time is 10:00 PM. This allows parents to continue their date night after the concert before picking up their children!
Parents must complete the registration form after reserving ROCOrooters, which can be found in the order confirmation email. For any questions, please contact Amy Tang, Operations Manager, at [email protected].
Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need to go to the concert?
Yes! We expect parents to attend the concert. ROCOrooters is designed to complement the Albert & Margaret Alkek Foundation In Concert Series performance, creating an age-appropriate experience for the whole family!
ROCOrooters is not intended to be a stand-alone childcare service for parents or families who do not attend the concert. Those found in violation of this may be denied registration for future programs.
What is the music education lesson like?
A member of SJD’s staff, a certified early-childhood music educator, presents an age-appropriate lesson connected to the piece of music the children get to see performed in the concert hall. Frequently, the piece they get to see is a commissioned, world premiere! We believe it is valuable for children to experience the music of living composers and to be part of the piece’s history. The lesson often includes a craft project they can take home. While the lesson is presented by church staff, it is non-religious.
What do I need to bring?
Infants and toddlers: diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, bottles and/or food with feeding instructions, and a small blanket.
Children ages 2 and up: If your child is staying for the full evening, you may want to bring a small pillow, blanket, or mat for them to use during movie time. If your child is newly out of diapers or prone to accidents, please bring a change of clothes. Otherwise, you don’t need to provide anything other than an excited kid!
Please note: all items that you expect to return with you at the end of the evening need to be clearly labeled with your child’s first and last name.
What if my child has dietary restrictions or isn’t eating solid foods yet?
Please bring appropriate food and/or bottles, along with feeding instructions, in labeled containers. If your child is staying for the full evening, please provide enough food for dinner and a snack.
How do you ensure safety?
ROCOrooters partners directly with The Church of St. John the Divine (SJD) staff to utilize resources from their existing childcare programs. The childcare staff are highly trained, certified, and bonded. SJD’s Nursery Coordinator and a Ministry Assistant help manage the program, and both are on-site for the entire evening. After registration, parents will receive the Nursery Coordinator’s contact information, who will be the main point of contact for check-in and check-out.
During ROCOrooters, access to the administration building is limited to the main front doors; all other entrances are secured. There is a check-in desk at the entrance staffed by the Nursery Coordinator. An off-duty Houston Police officer is stationed at the entrance, and roving security patrols the campus while children are on-site.
What is the staff-to-child ratio?
We accept children aged 2 months to 10 years old. The ratio varies by the children’s age:
- For infants: 1 adult to 3 infants
- For children aged 1-5 years: 1 adult to 6 children
- For children aged 6-10 years: 1 adult to 8 children
