HOUSTON, TX – ROCO opens The W.T. & Louise J. Moran Foundation Connections Series with an eclectic program curated by and featuring Principal TubaAli Jackson,on Saturday, October 10, at 5:00 p.m. at Parker Elementary School.
Spanning lyrical melodies to rhythmic Caribbean works, the program also features ROCO percussionist Craig Hauschildt on Caribbean percussion along with pianist Catherine Schaefer, showcasing the versatility of the tuba and euphonium beyond their traditional ensemble roles.
Jackson remarks, “I used to be told what I shouldn’t or wouldn’t be able to do on the tuba. I didn’t listen to them, so here’s a tuba recital!”
The performance will spotlight works by Gordon Jacob, Paul Hindemith, and John Cheetham, along with a suite of familiar tunes by Harry Belafonte (“Haiti Cherie,” “Day-O,” and “Jump in the Line”) arranged by Ali himself, creating an engaging program shaped by Jackson’s artistic exploration.
The performance takes place in Parker Performance Hall as the school celebrates its 50th anniversary. Jackson, who teaches at Parker, also brings a personal part of his life to the stage, connecting his work as a musician and educator in a concert that reflects the ways music has shaped his artistry.
